This last weekend the long anticipated new night spot Space Menorca opened its doors in Ciutadella. The inauguration is perfectly timed to coincide with the town’s annual fiestas of Sant Joan, the biggest event of the year.
The result of ambition, dedication and a lot of hard work from the team behind the project, Space Menorca adds a new dimension to the range of activities the island has to offer to residents and visitors.
The Port of Ciutadella has long been a hub for the island’s nightlife, the main attraction being the successful adaptation of the historical buildings into restaurants and bars, without losing their original character.
Creating a unique and picturesque atmosphere, the port is lined with waterside restaurants which lead into private walled gardens and caves in Es Pla de Sant Joan. Many of these have been converted into bars and nightclubs, 14 in total that offer music to suit all tastes. Space Menorca is the latest and largest conversion and takes up home in the property known as s’Hort de Cas Comte.
The original Space Ibiza is one of the largest clubs in the world, and with 23 years in the business is a well connected brand contributing to the prestige and economy of the island. Recently launching the brand into a franchise, Space Menorca is one of four new clubs in the Space group, the second after Space Sharm in Egypt with Brazil and Dubai to follow.
The process of bringing the Space brand to Menorca has been a delicate and detailed one with the involvement of the local heritage department, Patrimoni del Consell ensuring that the original structure and facade was maintained during the renovation. In this aspect both the organizers and authorities had the same goal to keep the traditional estectics of Es Pla de Sant Joan. The vision was to bring the essence of the Space Ibiza brand to Menorca and adapt it to the location to provide a multifunctional venue fully integrated into the landscape and existing building.
The result is spectacular. With a capacity of 600 people Space Menorca has the space for everyone with three distinct zones: a large grassed area and bar on entry with a central staircase, an enormous rooftop garden and chill out area with sofas, parasols, tables, panaoramic views of Es Pla, and the fully restored tower and arches of the original farm. Under the terrance is the hidden gem, a fully sound proofed club room with two bars, a VIP area, elevated DJ booth and large comfortable dance floor with the latest light and sound technology. The whole venue both inside and out is complemented with traditional Menorcan features such as whitewash walls, local plant life and the sandstone walls known as pared seca. Perhaps the final touch is the show of support from locals of all ages during the opening weekend. It was refreshing to see such a mix of people enjoying themselves, as the venue is designed to suit anyone looking for a special night out.
Space Menorca is also promoting local talent with resident DJ Gelabert, a Menorcan back on the island for the summer season. Another highlight is the ‘Delicious’ event every Saturday, with resident DJ Juan Alcalde, aka Spider. Spider, is famous worldwide for his sensational sets at some of the biggest clubs and on radio Flaix FM Mallorca. He is a regular visitor to Menorca and always makes a special guest appearance for the fiestas of Sant Joan. The list of impressive international headlining acts is already confirmed for the special events of the season, check out the website for Space Menorca to find out more.
Unique venues like Space Menorca and the one and only Cova d’en Xoroi, both ensure that Menorca matches the best of Balearic nightlife.
A good night out in an amazing venue with the local and international DJs is the perfect compliment to the variety of activitites on the island.
