But in Menorca, known as ‘the windy island’ of the Baleares, when a gentle breeze picks up pace it plays a bigger role than just allowing us to get a good night’s sleep. This week has been a sunny but breezy one too!
Crystal Clear Sea
Menorca’s windy island name comes from the fact that Menorca is practically flat compared to its neighbouring islands and quite close to sea level. Whilst the lack of mountains allow for a spectacular 360º view from Monte Toro in the centre of Menorca, this absence of natural wind protection does mean that practically the entire island is affected by the wind in some way.
How does that affect daily life?
FOR SWIMMERS
For most people this will affect at which beach you choose to spend the day. Due to presence of jellyfish in the Mediterranean, it is the wind that is solely responsible for whether the beaches are completely clear or full of these pretty little stingers. Its part of island life, getting up in the morning and seeing which way the wind is coming from and going to the beaches in the opposite direction. If the wind comes from the north, then head to the south and if it’s coming from a southerly direction, head north for crystal clear turquoise waters. It’s the difference between swimming or not in some cases.
FOR BOATS

If you are a sailing or windsurfing fan then Menorca is the perfect place to indulge in your interest with Sailing or Windsurfing Schools or Yacht Charters at different spots around the island. However if you are more of a motor boat fan then the strength of the wind can affect whether or not you actually get out to enjoy a day on the sea. Whether you leave Cala Morell, Port de Fornells or Port d’Addaia on the north, Port de Mao in the east, Cala Galdana o Cala’n Bosch in the south or Ciutadella in the west, where the wind is coming from and how strong it is has a huge affect on how pleasant the journey will be.
There really isn’t a day that goes by without a breath of wind, but on the days where the sea resembles ‘un plat’ a plate, or ‘un mirall’ a mirror as they say here, that is the day to get out the jet and water skis and thoroughly enjoy the tranquility of world’s biggest swimming pool.
Most days in Menorca, the wind is pleasant during the summer months, and is the indicator that aids you to plan your day and perhaps provide a few playful waves at the beach too!
